The Opportunity

Our engineering organization is evolving to support increasingly sophisticated AI-enabled, data-driven products. We’re hiring a Director of Engineering to lead platform engineering across data platforms, shared services, and core application systems that underpin product delivery. You’ll raise delivery reliability, establish clear ownership, and drive architectural direction that enables scalable, AI-capable products – turning ambiguity into structured execution and measurable outcomes.

Your Impact

  • Own platform strategy and execution across data infrastructure, shared services/APIs, and core systems while improving delivery predictability and systematically reducing technical debt.
  • Strengthen and evolve the platform engineering operating model to support scalable growth and increasing product sophistication.
  • Elevate and enforce standards for operational readiness, performance, security, observability, and SDLC discipline.
  • Champion pragmatic adoption of AI across engineering workflows and product systems – accelerating developer productivity, enabling intelligent data-driven features, and ensuring the platform can support emerging AI capabilities.
  • Lead and develop engineering managers and senior engineers, setting high expectations for accountability, ownership, and cross-functional leadership.

What Success Looks Like

  • Engineering execution is predictable, disciplined, and aligned with company priorities.
  • Clear ownership and sound judgment reduce friction across teams and stakeholders.
  • Platform investments materially improve product capability, reliability, and development velocity.
  • Engineering is viewed by senior leadership as a decisive, accountable, and strategic partner.

Who We're Looking For

  • Required technical qualifications
  • 10+ years in software and/or data engineering, with significant experience in platform or shared-services environments.
  • 4+ years leading engineering managers and senior technical contributors across multi-team, cloud-based architectures.
  • Proven ability to improve execution discipline, organizational effectiveness, and cross-functional alignment at scale.
  • Experience defining platform strategy and operating models while balancing modernization, disciplined technical debt reduction, and ongoing delivery commitments.
  • Experience operating in data-intensive, analytics-driven product environments is strongly preferred.
  • Technical Environment & Architectural Expectations
  • NRG’s engineering platform spans modern front-end applications, backend services, and warehouse-native data systems in cloud environments. Our stack includes React applications, Java/Spring and Python-based backend systems, shared APIs, dbt-based data platforms, orchestration workflows, Snowflake and BigQuery analytical warehouses, and Postgres databases.
  • The Director of Engineering is expected to have sufficient technical depth to:
    • Evaluate architectural trade-offs across front-end, backend, and data systems.
    • Drive coherent platform evolution, balancing modernization and disciplined technical debt reduction with active delivery commitments.
    • Raise the bar on engineering rigor across reliability, data modeling, CI/CD, and observability.
    • Ensure platform investments enable scalable analytics and AI-driven product capabilities while aligning with business priorities.
  • Your degree(s) – B.A./B.S. degree in Computer Science or a related field – or equivalent work experience.
  • Communicator and relationship builder You’re adept at conveying technical complexity to non-technical team members.
  • Project management and organizational skills You possess goal tracking, priority setting, and metrics competencies, supporting oversight of multiple concurrent project initiatives across the enterprise.
  • Analytic thinker You solve complex problems, which support and enable sound decision making, and you have the desire to brainstorm future-thinking ideas.
  • Curious learner You’re up to date on the latest best practices and technologies, are willing to experiment with new technologies.
